Last updated 3/24/2008 Selecting the Perfect What does the "negative" number on the Fastpitch Softball Bat mean? The "negative" number that you see on Fastpitch Softball Bats is a quick way of understanding the weight of the bat in relation to its length. That is, to calculate the weight (in ounces) of the Fastpitch Softball Bat, subtract the "negative" number on the bat from the bat's length. Note: This is often referred to the "drop" or "minus". For example, if you have a Fastpitch Softball Bat that is 31 inches in length, and the "negative" number is -11, them the weight of the Fastpitch Softball Bat is 20 oz. The "negative" numbers will range from -8 to -13 so a Fastpitch Softball Bat with a -13 will be the lightest bat for that length. It
is important to take your body size and strength into
account. Fastpitch Softball Bats with a
-12 and -13
ounce drop works well for smaller players
with less upper body strength because they have the advantage of
having a longer bat with a lighter weight. If
the Fastpitch Softball Bat is too light, you may not be able to feel
the bat head. If you can’t feel where the bat head is, you
will suffer a loss of control. Additionally, when you swing – your
lead shoulder will always open too soon.
